Global manufacturing partners get thin client web access to high traffic IMS application at PSA Peugeot Citroën

PSA Peugeot Citroën selected SysperTec's Virtel Web Access to replace a costly private SNA network with straight Internet connections. The solution allows 400,000 global manufacturing partners to access a high-traffic IMS application over the Internet from thin client workstations.

PSA Peugeot Citroën left the application's legacy "green screen" interface unchanged to avoid having to retrain the 400,000 global application users, and benchmarked the web access solution with up to 16,000 concurrent users to insure it would support current and future workloads.

SysperTec configured Virtel to automate the national language selection, as well as EBCDIC conversion for DBCS workstations such as those used in China, Russia, or Japan.

The customer

PSA Peugeot Citroën manufactures automobiles and light commercial vehicles under the Peugeot and Citroën brand names. Through subsidiaries, the company also manufactures automobile components, motorcycles, light-armored vehicles, and components for the military and aerospace industries.

The challenge

To reduce network expenses, PSA Peugeot Citroën needed to eliminate the costly private SNA network used by its global manufacturing partners to access a high-traffic IMS application.

The solution

PSA Peugeot Citroën decided to replace its SNA network with straight Internet connections using SysperTec's Virtel Web Access:

  • PSA Peugeot Citroën left the application's legacy "green screen" interface unchanged to avoid having to retrain the 400,000 global application users
  • PSA Peugeot Citroën benchmarked the new web access solution with up to 16,000 simultaneous web client connections per product instance (*) to insure that the solution would support current and future workloads
  • SysperTec configured Virtel to automate the EBCDIC conversion for DBCS workstations such as those used by manufacturing partners in China, Russia, and Japan
  • SysperTec configured Virtel to select the user's language at logon and call the multilingual IMS application with appropriate language parameter

(*) Several product instances can coexist and serve the same application if need be.

The results

Today the Virtel Web Access solution serves 400,000 users located in 150 countries 24×7 with 3,000 simultaneous users on average, and up to 10,000 users at peak time.
